Why the old phonograph?

This question like all the others is simple.  The answer remains the same – it is because of Doctor Who.  The Face of Evil in this case.  After the Doctor has successfully removed his personality print from Xoanan he and Leela enter the room where Xoanan is housed.  The arrive to a room with just the device through which Xoanan’s voice is coming from.  Upon saying a few things Xoanan produces a couch for them to sit and an old phonograph out of thin air.

Lost not wanting to waste anything used this prop just like it was done in Doctor Who.  In the Season 5 episode 10 episode titled “He’s our you” Sayid is taken to Oldham who is their torturer.  You see the group approach and you can see that an old phonograph is sitting on a wooden table in front of an old style tee-pee.

Either Bad Robot Productions and ABC procured the rights from the BBC to remake Doctor Who or they didn’t.  I for one can’t say either way as I don't know the rules concerning intellectual property.  I do know however that it is a remake without a doubt.
