This was the Androids of Tara episode in which Romana was a dead ringer for the Princess and Count Grendal wanted to rule the planet.
He planned on killing the Prince and then marrying Romana setting himself up as the rightful ruler. They were then brought before the Archimandrite who was to perform the ceremony.
He was then planning to kill her. It wouldn’t have been real by law as Romana wasn’t the Princess.
The same can be said of the Wedding of Kate and Kevin. Since Kate used a fake name of Monica by law the whole thing wouldn’t have be real either.
The bottom line is Kate was shown getting married only because of the scene where Count Grendal tried to perpetrate a fraud to gain control of Tara, much like the writers and producers of Lost passing off Lost as their idea.
